Dr Aric Sigman

American psychologist Dr Aric Sigman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Member of the Institute of Biology and has received the Chartered Scientist award from the Science Council. His recent talk at the Houses of Parliament on the effects of television, caused widespread public debate. He has conducted research on a range of subjects, from psychosurgery, to the effects of hypnosis on the brain and autonomic nervous system, to children’s diets. He is the author of Remotely Controlled (Random House) about the physical and psychological damage caused by watching television. Dr Sigman travels to some unusual places, including North Korea, Timbuktu Mali, Bhutan, Tonga, Myanmar, Laos, Iran, Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Far Eastern Siberia.

Dr Sigman has written and presented scientific documentaries for BBC1 and Radio 4 on the scientific basis of faith; the biology of hypnosis; and on the effects of too much choice, and for Dispatches on Channel 4 on the hidden detrimental effects of moderate dieting. His health and psychology book Getting Physical won The Times Educational Supplement's Information Book Award, being described as “One of the most deserving winners any of us had seen … this book sets the standard for others to follow.” Dr Sigman also presented a daily, 2-hour social affairs programme The Dr Aric Sigman Programme for LBC Radio in London

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Dr Sigman has a facility to communicate to a wide variety of audiences, along with extensive experience in bringing developments in psychology to the workplace and business, through lectures, workshops, seminars and public speaking. He was Runner-Up as Best Business Columnist in The Publisher Magazine Publishing Awards for his health and psychology articles in the CIPD journal Personnel Management. Dr Sigman has also designs and conducts studies; research reviews, compiles reports, or acts as a spokesperson for a large number of major organisations from BUPA to the Royal Agricultural Society.

Dr Sigman’s public speaking engagements include a recent address to the Children and the Media Conference at the Houses of Parliament, a keynote speech at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development annual conference, the Department of Trade and Industry conference and the Radio Academy, as well as debating at the Oxford Union. For his at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Annual Psychology at Work Conference December 2003, Dr Sigman was rated as best speaker.

Dr Sigman continues to appear on programmes including Radio 4’s Today and The Moral Maze as well as on BBC World Service, ITN and BBC1 News and Newsnight.
